Hepworth United FC recentley held it's second Annual Holme Valley Schools Girls Football Tournament and at the third attempt we were finally blessed with some good weather. With nearly 100 girls taking part it was a fantastic eveniong of fun and football at Far Lane. Last years runners up Scholes J&I School were looking strong again and were being tipped to be the favorites yet many other schools were out to claim the trophy. Teams from Hepworth,Honley,Netherthong,Wooldale, Scholes, and Brockholes were all out to give it their best shot.
The games were all very competative with no one team suffering a heavy defeat, infact the majority of games were won by the odd goal or two. As the evening passed it was starting to shape up into a three horse race between Scholes, Hepworth and Honley. In the end it was Scoles and Hepworth who secured reached the final to play for the trophy.
In a thrilling final where both teams had chances the game finished 0-0 so it was down to a dreaded penalty shootout and who could hold their nerves the most. Just as the final was a thrilling event so was the penalty shootout as Hepworth Goalkeeper Ruby Duke pulled off three outstanding saves from three superb penalties to help her team claim a 2-0 shootout win that gifted them the trophy. And for the second year running Scholes finished runners up having pushed Hepworth all the way. Congratulations to both teams for making the final a hugely entertaining affair, Commiserations to Scholes J&I School who hopefully can go one better next year.
A huge well done top all players , parents, teachers and school staff who helped make this event happen agaim by giving up their time. And a big congratulations to the champions Hepworth J&I School and head teacher Mr Crouch who lead his team to victory roared on by a noisy crowd of parents.
Once again a great showcase of the talented sportswomen of the future from the Holme Valley and hopefully they can be seen playing in various teams around the area for years to come with the overall winner being Womens & Girls Football
