Second half fightback too little too late

Following a heavy opening day defeat Hepworth were back on the road again to Leeds Medics & Dentists and yet again it was going to be a tough task to come away with a result as due to holidays and ongoing injuries they were down to a bare 11 for the second week running. This was further impacted as club captain Kirsty McCluskey was forced to pull out following a car accident (not her fault I may add). The day rapidly went downhill upon arrival as the home side informed Hepworth that the appointed match official would not be attending due to being moved to another fixture by county Fa. Despite the home side having five subs and nearly fifteen spectators they were unable to appoint a referee so if fell to away manager John Field to take up the whistle which left Hepworth without any coaching staff to aid the players. The large pitch and hot weather and only 11 available players was not a good combination to have as several players were already nursing injuries, and Leeds used their rotation of players to good effect. The opening exchanges were positive and Hepworth were in the game for a good twenty minutes, but the pacey forward line soon breached the away defence and by half time Leeds found themselves six goals to the good without reply though not from lack of trying as they had several good chances but could not make the breakthrough. The half time talk was positive as Hepworth had played the better passing football and had plenty of possession but were hit too often on the break with long punts and a kick and chase. Players stretched and took on fluids but knew already the game was lost and it was all about pride. The second half was a lot more competitive and Hepworth dragged themselves back into the game when early on Iggleden put Hannah Nicholl through to score. From an Amy Thompson corner Amy Whiteley scored her first goal for the team with a back post header before Jayne Smith fired a free kick in off the bar from just outside the box to make it 6-3. The eleven players where soon down to ten as Clare Gorse had to depart due to a works function she had to attend and this with tired legs cut short any chance of a fight back. Leeds went on to score 3 further late goals to make it 9-3 a score line that did not reflect on Hepworth's hard work and effort from each and every player. Stand in captain Lucy Page was voted the Keystone Europe Ltd player of the match but she was unable to steer the side to a first league win.
