All Square at Far Lane

Unbeaten Tingley Athletic made the trip to Far Lane for what was likely to be a title decider in the race for the Premier Division. Tingley unbeaten all season and Hepworth the only team that could catch them all made for an exciting match and so it turned out to live up to all it's expectations. With kick off delayed due to a shortage of referees, the league thankfully managing to accuire the services of Graham Hughes at the last minute having already officiated in two games on the day. An accident on his route caused him to be delayed further but upon his arrival both teams were raring to go. Tingley opting to play up the slope were pushed back insde the first minute as Hepworth went on the attack and Tingley were lucky not to be a goal down as a Lucy Pickles cross was headed goalwards by Hannah Nicholl with the Tingley Keeper just managing to tip it onto the bar, Hepwoprth appealed that the ball had bounced over the line as it was scrambled away only to fall to Amirah Jalloh who's first time shot was scrambled off the line and away. Hepworth kept pushing forward at every opportunity forcing errors at the back but were not able to get the goals they deserved for all their early pressure. Abigail Iggleden linked up well with Captain Rebecca Purchon a quick one two pass near the edge of the box but Tingley made a desperate last ditch block to thwart the attack. Jalloh and Nicholl both were linking up well as Hepworh attacked down both flanks, if any thing Hepworth were just a little too cautious and instead of going for the goal, they were often looking to set each other up rather than being selfish and going for goal. The home side had the majority of the better chances and limited Tingley to long range efforts or to just pumping the ball forward for their pacey striker. Who on another day could have grabbed a goal or two but Hepworths Laura Hirst had her zipped tight in her pocket for long periods giving her no chance.
Sitting alongside Laura, Claire Berry was able to orchestrate most of the Hepworth attacks passing and was spraying the ball about well. Claire was also the first line of defence and she worked tirelessly throughout the match. The back three of Hellawell, Halstead and Kirk were pretty comfortable for long periods and when they were breached Rebecca Harper was quick to react racing off her line to either clear the danger or smother the ball. Halstead was winning everything in the air and stood out in her role as sweeper covering both sides of the pitch. As the half went on Tingley did find their way back into the game but did not have too many chances on target but found Harper in great form, aided by some solid defending, they dealt with any real threat thrown at them. That was until the 37th minute when a cross into the six yard box from the left saw Hellawell in the correct place but unfortunately under pressure from the striker was helpless to stop the ball deflecting into her own net from just two yards out totally against the run of play. The striker was then extreamely unsporting and unprofessional in her actions as she rubbed salt into the wounds of Hellawell with some unnecessary comments. Tingley were very furtunate to be heading in a goal up at half time as the home side could have been three or four goals up themselves. Everything was possitive in the half time talk and Hepworth were looking to carry on as they had in the first fourty five. Within four minutes Hepworth should have been level as Sophie King breached the Tingley offside trap as everyone stopped including Sophie only for the official to point out she was played on by the Right back that brief second or too was enough to make Sophie pull her shot and it struck the post. It looked like it was one of those days but Hepworth urged on by the management and supporters kept pushing forward Rebecca Purchon set Abigail Iggleden free but her shot was just wide on 67 minutes. The game was now end to end but Hepworth defended bravely, continuous shouts and appeals from the Tingley side for red cards ,yellow cards and protection for players seemed ridiculous as it was a hard fought top of the table battle with strong solid tackles. It was a proper game of football as both teams went for it. Hepworth forced a Corner through intelligent play by Iggleden which Rebecca Purchon with pin point accuracy placed on the head of Becky Kirk who leap like a salmon and her bullet header nestled in the back of the net to make it 1-1 on 78 minutes. There only looked like there would be one winner now as Hepworth had Tingley rattled and on the back foot, challenges from both team became niggly and Tingley tried to run the clock down at every opportunity. Hepworth had used their two subs continually throughout resting players and replacing like for like, this gave a continual fresh boost of energy as King, Jalloh, Pickles and Green all stamped their mark on the game in spurts to grind Tingley down. Kirk having scored was forced to work overtime and picked up a booking for a tired tackle late on as did Lucy Pickles just before the final whistle for a needed yet mistimed tackle and yet again the Tingley crowd wanted the red card yet it was only ever in the laws of the game going to be a yellow. All in all this was an outstanding game of football from both sides and the game was full of talking points, some would say a fair result Hepworth may feel they should have had all three points. As it is both teams go again on Wednesday night at Casson Avenue, Tingley in the return League fixture. It was really difficult to pick any one individual out as every single player in the team was outstanding but the squad awarded it to Laura Hirst for her superb effort.
