Lucky Seven with a High Five

Hepworth entertained Wetherby Athletic at Far lane, with the pitch being passed fit thanks to the ground staff it was all systems go. With Wetherby winning the toss and opting to play up the gentle slope, Hepworth looked to press and keep Wetherby pinned deep in their own half. It was the home side that made all the early pressure as they went in search of goals. On 7 minutes Jolene Forrsest had a great effort but the keeper poked it wide and out for a corner. Five minutes later and Forrest turned provider as she sent a great cross over into the box and Merita Prebrezova fired straight at the keeper. Jolene Forrest's hard work paid off in the 13th minute as she latched onto a poor clearance on the edge of the area before drilling her left footed shot into the bottom corner of the net to make it 1-0. Hepworths pressure forced a corner inside a minute of taking the lead and prebrezova sent over another quality cross which was punched clear by the keeper whilst under pressure from Laura Hirst who was up for the corner, and Wetherby forced the loose ball away for yet another corner kick. Forrest took the corner this time and Laura Hirst met it well but her shot was blocked as and the ball was cleared but only as far as Prebrezova who fired an effort goalwards but yet again her shot was blocked with the loose ball falling to Hirst who pounced and drilled home a left footed shot into the net to make it 2-0. Hepworth were in total control at this point with Wetherby forced to defend deep and try hit Hepworth on the break which the home side were able to control relatively easily. With 16 minutes on the clock Abigail Iggleden had a great solo run but hit her shot straight at the keeper an Wetherby remained in touching distance of the home side still. Wetherby started to play their way into the game a little but without rally forcing Harper in goal for Hepworth to make any real saves, the odd dash of her lineto collect or clear the ball was all she really had to deal with. Mainly due to the commanding performances of Gemma Robshaw, Laura Hirst and Nichola Halstead who worked hard to clear up any danger. Wetherby almost seemed content to sit back and wait for their turn to play down the slope which is never really a good option. Just over half an hour on the clock Hepworth won a free kick just outside the area and up stepped Abigail Iggleden to try force her way onto the score sheet but her free kick sailed just over the bar.
Turning around hepworth expected Wetherby to launch the ball forward and they didnt dissapoint as straight from the kick off they pumped the ball forward but Hepworth were awaiting this tatic and had dropped deep in anticipation. Five minutes into the second halfhepworth picked up the ball deep in their half after another long ball from Wetherby and Jayne Smith drove up field and moved the ball to Jo Forrest who advanced further before releasing Abigail Iggleden who raced clear before despatching a fierce drive into the net past the keeper to make it 3-0. Ten minutes in and another great build up saw Hepworth extend their lead further as a quick throw to Smith split the midfield and she sent Emma Holroyd free and it was her great vision that set up Iggleden again as she raced onto the ball out on the rightbefore beating the defender and racing towards goal with the option of Sophie King in a good postion the keeper was caught in two minds and Iggleden pounced and blasted the ball towards goal and the Wetherby keeper could only parry the all into her own net. At 4-0 the match was really over and done with but Hepworth kept pressing and two minutes later Sophie King had a great opportunity but her shot was straight at the keeper and Wetherby survived a little longer. King had another good effort two minutes later but her effort went over the bar from a knock down by Hirst from a Feherova corner. Feherova who had come on at half time along side debutant Emily Husband and who slotted into defensive midfield role to help stem Wetherbys attacks and also break out from deep. For her first competative game in a number of years Em turned in a good solid performance and won the ball often in her role and was always looking to break into attack at every opportunity. Jayne Smith made a good break on 62 minutes and set Iggleden free and her run towards goal saw her beat one defender then round the keeper and beat a second defender before tapping the ball home with her left foot in a goal reminiscent of Mo Salah's for Liverpool, this put Hepworth 5 goals up. A few other changes saw Becky Kirk replace Nichola Halstead and then another debutant Emily Battye enter the game on the right wing. The ex under 16 player making her first senior ladies game and she performed well with several great runs on the wing and some good balls into the box, Battye was also willing to track back to help her team out in defence also. On 68 minutes Abigail Iggleden went on a solo run from the half way line and beat the keeper again to score her fourth and Hepworth's sixth goal, as Hepworth were in total control. With 75 minutes gone Merita Prebrezova set up Iggleden with a quality pass and Iggleden duely scored her fith goal and Hepworths seventh without reply. Two minutes later and Wetherby had their first real effort that forced harper to actually make a save as she pushed the shot around the post for a corner. From the resulting corner Wetherby headed home a consolation goal as their player was left unmarked in front of Harper who was helpless to stop it. All in all this was another good team performance which enabled Hepworth to give players game time and allow them to play tow debutant players. Hepworth look to build and move on to next weeks county cup last sixteen game against Sheffield FC at Far Lane, Hepworth. The player of the match award was given to Abigail Iggleden following her five goal haul and her great performance.
