The Development squad went out of the league cup following a thrilling cup tie at Far Lane in fron t of their biggest crowd yet as 65 spectators were there to see who would come out on top. Things started badley for the visitors Golcar United who lost a player with just 2 minutes on the clock following a dislocated knee cap. After the short break in play it was Hepworth, playing down the slope looked the brighter of the two teams and had golcar pinned back in their own goalmouth. Following a quick corner the ball was scrambled away and out for another corner and from the second one up popped captain Claire Berry to head home from a Rachael Pollinger cross. Almost imeadiately Golcar attacked from the kick off and caught Hepworth napping to equalise and make for an entertaining match. Hepworth picked themselves up and took the game to Golcar and after several minutes of pressure young Phoebe Lodge struck home from 20 yards out to put Hepworth 2-1 up with just eleven minutes on the clock. The first half saw Hepworth pretty much dominate possession and have the majority of the chances but yet they could not find the back of the net again. The Golcar keeper had several efforts put straight down her throat which made it easy and Hepworth failed to convert all their early pressure and chances.
Turning around 2-1 up Hepworth knew that they would have to defend ans Golcar would come at them but defend they did well for the first 15 minutes but they were forced to make several quick substitutions due to injuries and this just upset the balance and concentration a little. This is the break Golcar needed and as Hepworth sat back Golcar pounced on amistake and equalised again in the 65th minute.
The game then became more open with Golcar wasting many clear chances with some wild efforts from good positions and Hepworth also creating some good chances but Iggleden fired straight at the keeper from close range and a Mollie Smith effort hit the side netting. Nikki Swift hae an effort sail just over the bar and the keeper scrambled accross her goal to see another go just wide of the post. Hepworth through everyone forward lookingb for a winner and Nikki Swift was clattered by the keeper when through on goal but the referee failed to award a free kick, and added insult tom injury as he showed a red card to Kate Moran for protesting the decission after hearing the comments from the Golcar keeper. This unsettled Hepworth and Golcar stole the lead on 87 minutes after a quick counter attack after Hepworth being made to give the ball back from the break in play following the collision. The home side still had sevearal minutes to claw their way back and take the match to penalties but they wasted two further good opportunities and as they pushed every player forward they were caught in the 92nd minute with another breakaway goal to ease Golcar through to the next round 2-4.
A good performance again from the development team who are still bonding and finding their shape, but they are showing lots of promise and will only get better as the season goes on. The players player of the match was awarded to Phoebe Lodge who just pipped Nikki Swift and Claire Berry to the award.
