With both openers back in the hutch after 2 overs with only 3 on the board this looked like an excellent decision. Mymms opening pair Davies and Millard were a constant threat on an inconsistent wicket. Davies and Bartlam looked comfortable at the crease until Davies lost his off stump. Senior Riddle joined Bartlam and steadied the ship and saw off the openers.
On came the old Wiley Searle to bowl his very slow seamers. He quickly removed Bartlam. Junior Riddle joined his old man obviously Oran was determined to take the attack to the bowlers but this approach failed. At 69-5 Hertford were in the mire again. This quickly became 70-6 when Griddle gave such a faint edge that only the keeper was aware of it, with the umpire giving him not out he duly walked off. This soon became 71-7 when Coops got one that shot and hit him square in front.
Hertford needed the tail to wag and wag it did! Morgan and Ives put on 52 for the 8th wicket. Morgan went for one expansive shot too many and was caught 123-8 soon became 123-9 when Ives was caught behind for a well made 33 and with him surely Hertford’s chances of a decent total. Step up Alex Bartlam at No 10 with some proper shots and some able support from Giblett Hertford’s last wicket was worth 41 before Giblett was last man out.
With 165 to get Hertford believed they were in the game as long as they held their catches and bowled well. With both Mymms openers out to Morgan and the score on 29 Hertford’s belief was increasing. And then 42-3 Hertford were on a role. However Millard had other ideas and hit a good 68. When he was caught behind off Riddle with the score on 128 surely it was game over but Riddle had other ideas with a fine array of full tosses and long hops he managed to strangle another 3 wickets but with old timer Clements at the crease Mymms still had a cool head at the crease. When skipper Davies joined him they were able to carry Mymms over the line.
Same old story from Hertford not enough runs and too many 4 balls. Another game Hertford could have potentially won!
