Our good form continued as we obtained our first win of the New Year coming away from Coppull United with all three points in a 2-0 victory. Previously Coppull had only lost 3 matches all season and only one at home.
James Smith had defenders Kevin Cox and Adam Thompson available but was missing keeper Joe Griffith through injury and Bob Milton who was unwell. Reserve team keeper Sean Turton took his place in goal and David Hogg started up front with Richard Burns as skipper, Dan Birkby was amongst the substitutes.
After 5 minutes Turton was the first of the keepers in action and he was glad to see a wicked deflection go for a corner off the top of the bar. Thompson almost opened the scoring with a powerful header on 15 minutes but with the home keeper well beaten he was helped out by his defender headed clear off the line. However a minute later he was punished following a poor goal kick with Burns latching on to the loose ball before rounding the advancing keeper and smashing in off a defender who was desperately trying to keep the ball out of the net. Ten minutes before the interval we increased our lead with Jack Brierley drilling the ball past the keeper after being put clear down the left by Richard Wilson.
It wasn’t until the 64th minute before Turton had to make a serious save as we defended well and looked likely to increase the lead. Birkby came on for Hogg with 13 minutes to go and following a great marauding run by Burns he gave Birkby the chance to make it three but his powerful shot just went over the bar. Two minutes from the end Turton made a great save from a header to make sure his team kept their first clean sheet of the season.
This Easter weekend we have two home fixtures with Vickerstown from Cumbria the visitors on Saturday and Slyne-with-Hest from North Lancashire on Easter Monday both with 3pm Kick Offs.
