Hointon should have got some thing out of this one

Penzance Pirates 15 Honiton 3

The long wait continues as again Honiton slump to yet another frustrating league defeat.

This week it was Penzance amateurs who made the long trip up to Allhallows and for Honiton, despite there lowly league position were justified in thinking this might have beeen the week to register their first win.

Electing to play up the field, Honiton had to weather some early attacks form the visitors but with the help of a generous wind they were able to clear their lines and hlat the catch and drives and as the half went on Honiton got more and more confident and whilst exchanges were even they were playing some good rugby and defending well. The deadlock was broken on the 20 minute mark when Webber knocked over a penalty for the first score of the game. Honiton continued to attacked well but every time they got into the Pirates twenty two they made mistakes of which spilling the ball was the most notable and this was just frustrating give the effort put in to get into those positions.

With half time looming a scrum inside Honiton’s twenty two saw their influential number eight pick and go and whist he was dragged down short of the line his off load to his 9 saw the visitors score under the post and go into the half time with a slender 7-3 lead which was a harsh reflection on the general play.

With the slope advantage Honiton were still in confident mood and they did take the game to the visitors but again errors in the final quart of the field did cost dear. Pirates then added to their score with a penalty to go 10-3 up but Honiton still pressed and did look as if they could score. To the dismay of the crown a clear “two on one” should have seen dispatched with ease but it wasn’t. Honiton still pressed and again whilst attacking and looking as if they would score, an interception pass inside the opponents twenty two was gathered and the player with a ten metre head start, won the 70 yard foot race to the line. This effectively dashed Honiton’s chance of getting anything from the game and again it was desperately unlucky.

Once again it was a game Honiton could have won and the Pirates coach after the game said Honiton should have won it and he is mystified as to why Honiton remain winless given this performance. To the faithful those words and sentiment are echoed but unfortunately they doesn’t put points on the table and once again it is back to the drawing board. However on a positive note the last two performances have been good, not clinical but defiantly encouraging and there is an air of belief the Lacemen can get out of this mire!

Next week it is another visit of Cornishmen as Hayle make the trip up to Allhallows.
