KO. 3.00 PM

With a two match losing run Honiton were back in league action against Penzance at Allhallows.
Playing up the field and receiving the kick off Honiton made good ground but a wayward pass was intercepted and only a superb cover tackle by Ben Webber saved an early set back. Honiton regrouped and with 7 minutes on the clock they rumbled a try over the visitors line with Sam Coffey coming up with the ball.
Penzance pulled three points back with a well struck penalty but it was Honiton who then had large passages of possession but they struggled to break down a stubborn Cornish defence and it took 25 minutes before player coach Nathan Hannay forced his way over from short range. Ben Webber then added a penalty to put Honiton 13-3 up.
at the 35 minute mark and having butchered a two on one moments earlier, they made no mistake the second time round and it was Dominic Hawk who scored a try out wide.
This final score bought the curtain down on what was a workman like first half with the Lacemen a comfortable 18-3 up.
Playing down the slope Honiton turned the screw. Hannay got his second try early on and Webber added the extras. The visitors never gave up though and did make in roads but the Lacemen’s defence stood firm. There was then a good try dotted down by Matt Bailey after he showed a clean pair of heals to a couple of would be defenders and really it was all over as a contest and Honiton then put on the style, good work from Ollie Hyland gifted a score to Webber and Josh Rice worked hard to scored in the corner after a good break. Fittingly the try of the game was the last one as the ball went through several sets of hands and a neat inside pass from Hannay gave Will Tyers a clear run in under the posts. The final score was 51-3 and whilst it was an 8 try win they had to work hard to achieve this.
It was a good team performances from Goulden’s men but the Man of the match award went to the player coach, who was impressive through out. Yes there is still room for improvement with some of the handling and retention but when you think back to a year a go maybe critics are being a bit picky especially when the team wins by 8 tries to none and had to break down a side who never gave up.
Next week it’s a trip down to Plymouth to taken on Arguam
