Honiton romped to a convincing 105-0 thrashing of Newquay at Allhallows. The Lacemen were hosting their Vice Presidents and key sponsors in the sunshine and they were treated to fine display from the clinical home side.

Playing down the slope in the first half Honiton were keen to make an impression on the game from the outset, and when they marched the Cornish back at the first scrummage things looked good for the home side. It didn’t take long for the scoring to start with several pairs of good hands finding Canniford who broke through the line and lifted the ball to the on coming Ollie Rice who dotted down fifteen yards right of the posts.

From the kick off Honiton maintained the ball and some sensible offloading saw Bennett race down the left flank. He showed not only pace but also strength to fend off several defenders to cross on the left hand side. Soon the score board was ticking over very quickly as Rice and Way both scored in quick succession. Dalton, Robinson and Barratt were all at it before half time, as Honiton ran riot. Webber had converted four by this stage to take the scoreline to 48-0 at the break.

The Lacemen had spoken about leaving a few points on the field last time out at Veor, and the pre-match talk had circled keeping possession of the ball and not loosely flinging it around. Honiton improved in this area and it paid dividends. Honiton made changes at half time as Selway, Coutts and Hyland all joined the fray. The influential Barratt moved into the back row, unleashing more terror on the woeful Cornish outfit.

The disjointed nature of the seasiders defence allowed Honiton way too much room for penetration. The did well to honour fixture, but they are clearly heading out of this league, in desperate need of a re-build.

Honiton cantered home with tries for Thompson, Barratt x 3, Josh Rice, Selway, Robinson, Ollie Rice and even Guilbert. Thompson converted six as Honiton completed the biggest rout seen in the town for many a year.

Honiton conclude their league season next weekend with a trip to Exeter Saracens on Saturday and then at home to second placed Tiverton on Easter Monday at Allhallows. Please come and cheer the team home.
