On a cold and windy Saturday afternoon, the Huntsville Rugby Club opened at home against the Twin State Lions of Johnson City, TN.
In the first half, the Huntsville backline would draw first blood with a try apiece by centers Shane Brown and Brad Montgomery. Both scores would be converted by Fullback, Ryan Roof, giving Huntsville an early 14-0 lead.
After a series of back and forth moments, the Twin State backs would counter with a successful score and conversion. The first half would close with a successful score by debut winger and UA rugby alum, Ben Meinjohans, in his first appearance in the blue and maroon bringing the score to Huntsville leading 19-7.
Although Huntsville would dominate the line-outs and scrums, the Lions forwards would not lay down, successfully counter-rucking and poaching several balls from the HRC, would eventually lead to TS touching down the first try of the second half. Momentum would not be lost by Huntsville as loose forward and captain, Scott Terrell, would quickly respond bringing the score to 24-12.
After a series of physical exchanges, Huntsville winger, Jon Perreault would score his first try for the HRC. Shortly following, the Twin State forwards would respond with a score after several phases at the Huntsville goal-line.
The final score of the day would come from great communication between the loose forwards. Following a penalty, Steven Youkey would touch down after an impressive off-load from the No. 8, Kyle Graves. Huntsville had successfully defended home territory with a final score of 34-17.
