It is with much shock and sadness that the Club have to inform Members of the passing of
Sam Smith whilst he was in the United States.
Sam was a valued Member in the history of the Club who had been Secretary and also 1st XI Captain for a number of years.
Sam made his 1st XI debut as a young teenager at Horsforth Hall Park CC on 2nd May 1987 giving him the Club Heritage Number 453.
He went on to be an outstanding all-round cricketer on and off the field. He played 296 games for the Club, becoming the 4th highest run scorer in the Club’s 137 year history with 7,272 runs; scoring seven centuries and x41 50s.
He scored 115* v Bradshaw out of a 233 undefeated opening partnership in 1995 with Aussie Greg Hoysted whom he visited down under and played alongside him there.
He was an effective bowler taking 70 wickets and took 127 catches.
Sam’s career saw him play for Durham University and Otley before moving away to the United States and then back to London. However, he was always a firm supporter of Illingworth St Mary's Club.
Our thoughts are with his parents, Keith and Mary, Heidi and close cricket friends.
Funeral details will be announced when available.
