Our 19 year old shot stopper has been a credit to himself and was awarded POTM by manager Adam Vasey.

Game winning saves vs Teversal and a man of the match performance in the Fa Vase vs Saffron Dynamo to keep our clean sheet were highlights. However, throughout the month Shay has been solid between the sticks and a real voice of leadership on the pitch. Despite our recent run of bad form his talent speaks for itself. Vocal on the pitch when winning or losing, it’s great to see a lad as young as he is show such a good attitude on and off the field. Everyone at the club has no doubt that Shay will go far in the future.

I spoke to the man himself after yesterday's match vs Heanor Town.

Congratulations on being player of the month for September, as voted for by the manager. How do you feel?

“It feels good to finally see all that hard work in preseason paying off for me on the pitch. First of all I’m glad to be back really because obviously there are greater problems in the world because of Coronavirus. So it’s nice to see us all back on the pitch and playing and It’s been a great start for me.”

How long have you been goalkeeping for? It’s great to see a young lad like yourself starting every game at this level.

As long as I can remember really, ever since I was a kid I've always loved the position. It's all about getting muddy and having fun and that just progressed for me really and now i’m here trying to play as high up as possible.

Anyone particularly who inspired you growing up?

Yeah definitely, Iker Casillas has always been the role model for me. I believe if you lined up all the top goalkeepers of all time I believe in his prime Casillas was better than all of them so he definitely inspires me.

Obviously it's been a tough run of fixtures for the club against some very strong sides, what are you going to be doing going forward?

That’s it really we've just got to pick ourselves up at this point, we've had a run of bad form but all we can do at this point is lift ourselves up and prepare for the next match.

Thanks Shay and congratulations again.

Thank you, I really appreciate it.

The manager had this to say..

“Shay was a very deserving winner of the September POTM. It’s no secret that he’s worked incredibly hard behind the scenes to become our new number one and he fully deserves all the praise he got this month. He has worked closely for a while now with our goalkeeper coach Chris Allard on all aspects of his game and it has been great to see that hard work translate into great performances on the pitch.”

Congratulations Shay and keep up the hard work.
