The ladies 3rd team went into Saturdays match with Castaways brimming with determination. The prior two results against the Gainsborough based team were apples and oranges with a 6-1 win at home at the beginning of the season and then a shocking 2-1 defeat just prior to Christmas which had been unexpected and did not sit well with the team. So on Saturday it was imperative to reproduce the kind of result they had enjoyed at the beginning of the season. The squad was strong and had the added bonus of borrowing Livvy Hughes from the 2s.
The match started well with Ipswich quickly taking control and consistently causing problems in the Castaways defensive D. They didn’t have too long to wait before a superb pass from deep in midfield from Maddie Mann to Vic Clement up front saw Vic quickly beat a couple of defenders before slotting the ball home on the reverse. Play continued steadily with quick and concise passing from defence through to midfield really demonstrating the excellent hockey level of this Ladies 3rd team. However no further goals as the half time whistle blew.
The ladies went into the second half with as much determination as the first and within 10 minutes Castaways were blown away by a Livvy Hughes hatrick. The first was a cracking reverse shot from the top of the D which flew into the top left corner. The second a shot so hard again from the top of the D it ricocheted off of both posts before crossing the goal line and the third another cracking shot not giving the keeper a chance. Livvy then added herself a fourth. It was slightly less dramatic but no less important as a lengthy dribble from Vic Clement into the D with a roll out to top D saw Livvy calmly slot the ball home.
Sitting at 5-0 up it could be assumed that the game is very one sided but as is well known with a team such as Castaways this is never the case. Well known for their ability to crack long balls through the opposing team creating chance after chance for breakaway goals meant that the ladies defence had to be continuously alert and ready. Non stop blocking, tackling and clearing from the likes of Sarah Logan, Sarah Jeffrey and Ellie meant that the ladies scoreline was never truly under threat and the tireless legs of midfield meant the support in both defence and attack was faultless.
A final goal for the ladies came within the last few minutes of the game as Vic Clement claimed her second of the match by dribbling to the back line and saw her intended pass across goal actually end up directly in the goal. The ladies went in for teas very happy with their 6-0 win and Goalkeeper Tabbie keeping a clean sheet.
