Irvine Cricket Club secured a superb seven-wicket victory over East Renfrewshire, a result that guarantees promotion to Premiership 2 next season.
Having won the toss and elected to field, Irvine's bowlers produced an excellent all-round performance to dismiss the hosts for 169 in 39.3 overs. The attack was led by D Owens, who was outstanding with the ball, claiming 5 wickets for just 29 runs from his 9 overs. L Falvey provided superb support with 3 wickets for only 14 runs from 10 overs, including four maidens. M Alam also chipped in with 2 wickets.
East Renfrewshire made a promising start through A Fareed, who top-scored with 50 from 69 balls, but Irvine's disciplined bowling ensured that the home side could not build sustained partnerships. A Nadeem added a brisk 27 from 21 balls, while A Ghazanfar Ali Sarwat contributed 18, but regular wickets kept the scoring under control.
With 170 required for victory, Irvine's chase began with an early setback as D Aboobaker was dismissed for 4, but D Neil and L Falvey steadied the innings. Neil scored a valuable 42 from 65 balls before being dismissed, having helped put Irvine firmly in control.
The finish was emphatic. W Ali produced a superb unbeaten 49 from just 34 balls, striking six fours and two sixes, while S Gawande matched him with an unbeaten 49 from only 24 deliveries. Gawande's innings contained four fours and four sixes and came at a remarkable strike rate of 204.
The pair's unbeaten partnership of 86 runs took Irvine comfortably beyond the target, with victory arriving in just 27.5 overs.
It was a comprehensive performance from Irvine, with the bowlers setting up the victory before Ali and Gawande provided the explosive finish. Most importantly, the result confirms that Irvine Cricket Club will be playing Premiership 2 cricket next season.
There is still one major prize to play for, however. Next weekend's fixture against Glasgow Accies will almost certainly determine who finishes as league champions.
