The result was never really in doubt, the scoreline was and ultimately the game ended in a comfortable victory for the Surrey side.

In the absence of a report from any one watching with King’s tinted spectacles on, instead just a very brief recap of the score / scorers for posterity.

It has been a strange season, with the spectre of relegation removed in London 1 South (and the remainder of the RFU pyramid) arguably only the games involving the handful of teams striving to be promoted have had any true jeopardy to them. In reality, that tells only half the story as a closer look at the results indicates that outside those matches pitching the top three against one another, the outcome has been an all but foregone conclusion. Going into this round of fixtures the cumulative results for the top three of Camberley, London Welsh and Medway against the rest of the league stood at P54 W52 L2 – just Camberley’s defeat at H&F on the opening day and Welsh’s at Guildford the outliers – with the five additional losses the top three have suffered all having come at the hands of one another. It really has been a two-speed league in many ways with the remaining ten sides competing to the ‘best of the rest’.

So it was that depleted King’s side rode into battle more in hope than expectation against their invariably hefty and combative opponents. Whilst the visitors were more or less contained for the first thirty minutes (3-5; pen from George Jones) they made the game safe with a try BP by half-time (3-24) and stretched their legs in the second forty with six more, King’s bagging just one through Benoit Israel (converted Jones) to leave the final tally at 10-60.

Congratulations go to Camberley on their victory, their upward journey continues and they’ll do battle in the league currently called L&SE Premier but which may well end up rebranded by the time September rolls around or indeed reformatted completely as county lines disappear pursuant to Adult Competition Review.

Next up for King’s is the chance to have a crack at London Irish Amateur who pipped the old boys 32-29 in December. The match will be preceded by the President’s Lunch and whilst that is fully booked supporters are very welcome to take their place on the balcony to cheer the boys on as they look to regain some momentum as the season close draws near.
