Saturday 13th December 2014
By Kelvin Walton

London 2 South West leaders Tottonians produced a compelling all-round performance to defeat a spirited King’s squad at their Water Lane fortress. Totts showed admirable 1 to 15 coordination at key points in the game, with the pack combining to produce fast, clean possession when it was available, and the backs executing with speed and dexterity. King’s had to work very hard to generate try-scoring opportunities, and much of their afternoon was spent in defence.
The first half was well-contested, with Totts’ two tries (one converted) being answered by a Gareth Stoppani penalty goal. Stoppani’s kicking was a little wayward by his high standards – which cost me a pint after losing an ill-conceived wager with a local.
Totts went up through a couple of gears in the second half, and extended their lead to 19-3. King’s at last mounted a sustained attack, and when enjoying an ‘advantage’ call deep in Totts territory, fly half Rory Jones placed a perfect diagonal kick into the left corner, Ashley Smith touching down within the in-goal area. Unfortunately, the referee blew his whistle whilst this play was in progress - he did appear to be mortified afterwards. King’s somehow retained their poise, and sent Luke Minors in for a try down the right shortly after, Stoppani converting. Totts responded strongly, steadily extending their lead to 47-10, aided by some fine goal kicking by Robbie Searle. King’s defensive efforts took their toll, with Will Nelson and Tom Dugarin both being forced from the contest by shoulder injuries. King’s rallied to have the final say, a second try for Luke down the right wing, showing the side’s ability to stretch any defence in the league when they attack at speed - and the resilience of their morale.
Totts are surely bound for promotion this campaign. Their team has been strengthened in a couple of places, and they are shaping up well for the challenges ahead. The Club’s usual warm hospitality was enriched by the 75th birthday celebrations (or rather the warm up for them) of their legendary President, Ken Johnston.
King’s retain 4th place in the league, with Warlingham moving up to 5th, six points behind. The completion of last week’s fixtures represent the halfway point in the league campaign, and King’s, as a promoted club, must take heart from a credible, competitive performance. Next Saturday we start the second half with a home fixture against old friends London Cornish, who are in 3rd place. There is a holiday gap until 10th January, when we travel to Weybridge Vandals. Let’s hope the weather stays on the dry side…
Season’s greetings to everyone.
