2XV return to winning ways

Saturday 18th October saw King's host Old Whitgiftian, with both outfits looking for their first win of the season. The intent was there from the off for King's as Marc 'Sideshow' Davies, making his long anticipated return after injury, put in a thumping first tackle stopping an Old Whitgiftian attack before it even got started. The hit boosted confidence in the Kings ranks and the momentum shifted to the men in gold, blue and red.

With continued pressure King's found themselves camped within the Old Whitgiftian 22 for the majority of the first 20 minutes. The deadlock was broken first with a well taken penalty by Nick Burberry and followed up by a drive over scrum with the ball pounced on by Kevin Herman. This was followed on by further tries from Angus Saunders and Nick Burberry.

The tempo was set and with a dominant pack Kings began to embed down in the Old Whitgiftian half setting the platform for the Kings back to probe the Old Whitgiftian line. However on the stroke of half time a fine kick from an offside penalty found Old Whitgiftian on the Kings 5 metre line. A well taken line out caught the King's forwards unaware and Old Whitgiftian got their first points of the match.

The second half saw more dominance from the Kings pack taking numerous scrums against the head and forcing penalties which were taken quickly to really keep the tempo going. Some great work from the backs from the scrums saw Angus Saunders and Nick Burberry cross the line again and Sean White crossed the white wash as well after a lovely ball from Joey Sherlock. The overall defence from the team was impeccable throughout the match with very few missed tackles and a high tempo defensive line that minimised the attacking threat.

Old Whitgiftian managed to secure a penalty on the King's 22 and opted to take the 3, King's quickly responded with some sleek moves in the backs to get right back into the Old Whitgiftian 22. After some great turnover ball and some dissent from Old Whitgiftian, Kings found themselves 10 metres out and a quick tap from Simon Wells saw him bundle over for the final points of the Afternoon.

Next week see's Kings take on Emmanuel away at Blagdon Sports Ground

Final Score: 42-8 ( T:Burberry 2, Saunders 2, Herman, Wells, White C: Burberry 2 P: Burberry)

MOM: Joey Sherlock - Great distribution and defence throughout the day.
(Special mentions to Rob Fairbrother and Neil Williams)
