A brave performance from the 2XV was good but not good enough to stop Camberley completing a season double over their hosts.

It has not been want of trying, nor a lack of desire, but this season has been a challenging one for the 2XV who find themselves 9th in what has proved to be an extremely competitive Surrey Championship. Camberley are firmly in the mix for the top step of the podium and the omens for King’s were not good – Cambo had not lost on the road since November and were the top scorers in the league with 482 points (115 more than the next best team) and a points difference of +270. That said, with a full squad of 21 and a formidable front row of the ‘Try Machine’ Mark Prior, the fully toothed Sam Rhodes and the redoubtable James Williams impossible is nothing…

Camberley have a proud, National League, history of big and abrasive forwards and the 2017 editions were no exception. For all King’s efforts they were to struggle up front and it was from a stolen scrum ball and subsequent breakaway than one converted try came in the first period, the other after King’s simply ran out of tacklers after wave upon wave of attack. Both were converted for a 0-14 half-time lead.

The second forty had more than a whiff of groundhog day as King’s continued to strive, but the last pass just wouldn’t stick and Camberley managed to quell the danger on each occasion. Whilst King’s tackled for all they were worth, Cambo just had a little too much ballast for the hosts and two more scores meant they were worthy winners 0-26.

Given King’s went down 47-14 away to Camberley today’s result against a team whose results and form have improved since that day whilst disappointing was certainly not anything to be ashamed of. Due to the way the dice have rolled King’s have five home games left they an opportunity to climb the table and take a few scalps along the way, and with a following wind who is to say that they might not do both.
