King's overcome Old Reigatians

No-one was more surprised than me that the boys somehow managed to beat ORRFC yesterday. With only 13 players at 2pm the KO was postponed 15 mins. so two stragglers could pull their boots on ( the 16th player arrived at half-time!) – not the best way to prepare for a semi-final. BIG thanks to the boys who did turn out, particularly those from U17’s & U18’s on their U21’s debuts. Kings started into the very strong wind and Aidan’s re-start kick almost went back over his head resulting in a scrum on halfway. The OR scrum was so dominant they pushed Kings to the 22 before being awarded a penalty! It had all the makings of a very long “day at the office”. However, OR didn’t score and Kings got possession, ran the ball wide and against all odds scored up the other end to take the lead after only 5 minutes! Despite being pushed all over the park at scrum & lineout the Kings boys tackled & tackled & tackled almost getting to half-time still in the lead. However, yet another inevitable scrum penalty lead to a “team yellow card” and OR subsequently took advantage to kick to the corner and drive over from close range – the only way they could get passed our defence. Tom Weston had to retire injured so Kings played with 13 for a while until Victor arrived to take us back to 14. In the second half Kings used the wind well to pin OR back and despite being a man down due to injuries in the front row resulting in un-contested scrums, Kings ran the ball wide at every opportunity to score two more excellent tries, eventually closing out the game with a penalty. When Jake left the field, after a super performance, with a sprained ankle we played without any wingers & still OR couldn’t score! A strange win but we will take it! We wish Tom & Jake a speedy recovery and thanks to Richard Ramsey for his support on the touch-line.
