Keighley opened by winning the first of their four pool games by beating Huddersfield YMCA after scoring immediately from the kick-off. Ryan Vero gathered Huddersfield’s kick and ran through several tackles before finding open space to score in the corner. Jordan Powell obliged with the conversion.
Keighley fielding several new players then faced a strong Old Brodleians side who dominated the game to win 28-0. Brodleians went on to win the pool.
Keighleys next game was against Skipton with Keighley struggling to find their form following the defeat by Old Brodleians. In the forwards Jobe Saint worked hard and there were good tackles from Vero and Lewis Taylor. However Skipton scored converted tries at the end of each half to win 14-0.
The final game was against Huddersfield RUFC who were keen to amass a large score to pip Old Brodleians to win the pool. However Keighley showed great character to put up strong resistance and at half time the score was 0-7 to Huddersfield, but they were clearly rattled by Keighley who had come close to scoring on two occasions. Keighley exerted pressure on Huddersfield in the second half, but were denied by strong defence. Huddersfield countered and fierce tackling by Collinge, Vero and Tanner denied them. Unfortunately with the final play of the game they were awarded a penalty 5 metres from Keighley’s line and charged over to deny Keighley.
