So close but not enough
Kirkstyles unbeaten start to the season continued on Saturday after claiming a "winning draw" against Inverclyde at Gourock Park.
After losing the toss Kirkstyle were asked to bat first.
The early loss of opener Alun Johnstone (3) brought Sandeep Dhaliwal to the crease and he and Fraser Mclaren took their time to play them selves in on a tricky pitch in the gloom.
Once settled both began to find the fence ( and beyond) regularly with a number of balls not returning.
Mclaren (59) fell shortly after reaching his half century bringing Steven Rice to the crease. He kept the scoreboard ticking with a well made 37 before he inexplicably ( for the second time ) left one that pitched on middle and hit halfway up middle and off. When Dhaliwal fell for a superb 85 trying to hit the ball into the clyde it brought a clattering of wickets as the batsmen tried to get quick runs.
Kirkstyle finished their innings on 203-7.
In reply Inverclyde set their stall out early. They showed no intention of attempting to chase down the total. The bowling was faultless, the fielding superb as Kirkstyle chipped away at the batsmen.
Colin Doyle, Adam Wilson & Johnstone all taking a wicket apiece. Michael Rice bowled well with no reward and Blair Dearie as accurate as ever taking 2 for 16 from his 10.
Going into the final over Inverclyde after nearly boring the bowlers to death had 3 wickets remaining and Gav Hurford nearly won the Game. Taking 2 wickets in the first 2 balls to then see the 4th ball fly through the slip cordon as the bat was surrounded finishing with figures of 4-27 from his 7 overs.
If Inverclyde had been as agressive with their batsas they were their tongues they may have got closer than the 119-9 they achieved.
So a "winning draw" it was. Arguably Kirkstyles best performance of the season.
Next week sees a free week so all eyes will be on the scores of the other teams in the division.
Thanks once again to Abbotsinch Tyres for their continued support.
