Kirkstyle entertained Galloway cricket club in Saturdays wdcu div 4 match sponsored by JK construction and builders. Kirkstyle looking to extend there unbeaten run of games to 11 and after a week of clearing up after the flooding of the ground it wasn’t sure whether the game would go ahead but a few hardy souls arrived early and got the ground in a magnificent state to host the game..
Kirkstyles captain for the day Alun Johnstone won the toss and opted to field with the weather looking to play a factor in the days proceedings. Captain Johnstone entrusted the new ball to Doyle(0-11) and Gibson(1-3) who bowled tight and caused the batsman a few problems with sheer pace and variation. The breakthrough came early on with Gibson bowling opener Clarke for a duck.. this brought Lindsay to the crease where he played a few shots before being adjudged Lbw to rice(1-20) for 5.. while at the other end Tabasum(1-10) bowled his usual very tight lines for very little reward. The galloway middle order did put up a little resistance to the Kirkstyle attacking bowlers but for not many runs. So it was decided by the skipper to introduce McFadzean(2-0)and younger Salgo(4-3) in to the attack to try and instigate some attacking shots from Galloway.. McFadzean was unplayable at times but also a little short as coaches Coleman and Hill told him at end of match.. Salgo bowled marvellous for such a young kid and got his reward in wickets at regular intervals and was very fitting that he finished off the Galloway innings by having the last batsman stumped after drawing her out the crease for keeper Neil to take the bails off easily..
With the incumbent weather looming in the distance captain Johnstone asked the visiting skipper if it was possible to turn straight round since Kirkstyle were chasing a small total..
Rice and McFadzean opened the batting and played some very nice shots putting away the bad balls and getting closer to the low target with every stroke played. McFadzean played round a straight one and was out plumb in front to the joy of the watching crowd . McKay came to the crease to join Rice who was only looking for boundaries from now on. So when Rice tried one too many shots and walked straight past one to be bowled it was then down to McKay and Tabasum to finish the innings off and get the team home inside 16 overs..
So with that win firmly under our belts all eyes and ears turned to Greenock where Kirkstyles closest challengers Hamilton Crescent were playing glenpark. Glenpark had scored 169 from the allocation of overs and it was firmly believed Crescent would chase this down. But weather played a part and the game was held up for 30 mins due to a shower.. so nerves were jangling and at around 7pm the news came through from Greenock that Crescent had failed in their run chase.. which now meant Kirkstyle were champions of WDCU Div 4 with 1 game to spare.
In 2 weeks time Kirkstyle travel to Galloway hoping to wrap up an unbeaten season.
