Park made the long trip over to Hull unsure what to expect from unfamiliar hosts and it was Cottingham who made their intentions clear from the outset.

Will Adams gathered the kick off and was hit with a bone shuddering tackle from three Tigers forwards. The Cottingham players were out to prove a point and were matching the strong runs of Henry Hilton, Ben Kedge and Kai Mellor with their own uncompromising defence. What looked like becoming a tough game became somewhat easier when the Tigers began giving away penalty after penalty.

The Tigers indiscipline gave Park the field position and quick hands from Niall Green, Hilton and Kai Mellor created the space for Byron James to dive in at the corner for his first try for the club. Aaron Brook was unsuccessful with the conversion attempt for a 0-4 lead.

A series of penalties straight from the kick off gave Park the territorial advantage again and it was Mellor who put Park further in front fending off two attempted tacklers to score down the right hand side, Brook adding the extras from a difficult angle for a 0-10 scoreline.
At this point the game had become dominated by persistent infringements and with the penalty count weighing heavily in favour of Park the Cottingham players were becoming frustrated. Tom Inman added to their frustration by throwing a dummy and diving over from acting half for another converted try and a 0-16 lead. Frustration finally boiled over and a Tiger’s player was sent to the sin bin for abusing the referee, shortly afterwards a home fan was given a red card also for abusing the referee and she was asked to leave the touchline.

The game restarted and despite not firing on all cylinders Park continued to dominate possession. They extended their lead just before half-time when Niall hit a ball at pace crashing through the line and offloading in a covering tackle to the supporting Nathan Marlor who won the race to the line, grounding the ball next to the sticks allowing Brook a simple conversation taking the score 0-22.

The second half continued to be a stop start affair with Park giving the referee plenty of opportunity to even up the penalty count. Park’s final try of the morning came when Niall managed to juggle a dodgy pass and step through some weak defending to put his side 26 points up with Brook again adding the extras for 0-28. Cottingham did manage to score a late consolation try when their acting half dived through some weak marker defence to score a converted try from close range. This came after a spirited Park defended a number of repeat sets on their own line. Although the performance tailed off somewhat in the second half, Park did show good discipline and character throughout the whole game and deserved their comfortable 6-28 victory.
