Kings Struggle in Heavy ConditionsMatch Report - 16/3/24

Kingsbridge took their last trip of the season over the Tamar but came away empty handed as they fell to a 34-17 loss to Pirates. Pirates reversing the heavy defeat they had earlier in the season. With the previous weekends fixture against St Ives cancelled Kings have only played one game in the last five weeks and it showed. Kings were strangely off the pace for most of the game and making unforced errors and the link play that has been beginning to show real promise lacking.
The first half started with Pirates dominating the first exchanges and it wasn’t too long before they scored. A penalty to touch and a catch and drive saw them over for a converted try. Kings responded immediately with a well worked try as Vincent cut a fine line and touched down under the posts. Newman converting. With the heavy pitch making it difficult for much free-flowing rugby Pirates took the lead again as they scored off the back of the scrum, having scorned an easy three points from yet another penalty awarded against Kings. They soon doubled their lead as a clean break in the middle saw the Pirates center nearly through, but even though he was cut down by Toby Baldry he managed to get the ball away to his winger who crossed for an unconverted try. Kings tried to respond and got close through Tom Winzer but ultimately failed tom take advantage of some good field positions. Leaving them trailing 19-7 at halftime.
The second half was really disjointed as the referee stopped play so many times to lecture the players that the game never really flowed. Kings had plenty of ball with good breaks by Rich, Palmer and Joe Banfield none of them ending with a score, too often the final pass not being given or kicking as the wrong option. Finally, a clever kick from Newman saw Tom Winzer gather and race over for Kings. No conversion added. Pirates kept the scoreboard ticking over as they crossed for a third converted try. Pirates scrum half was dictating play and kept them going forward through clever tactical kicking, but not to be out done Kings Joe Banfield cleverly pierced the Pirates defense with a clean break to score. Pirates increased their lead with a penalty after yet another high tackle infringement and rounded off their afternoon with a bonus point try as their center made a clean break, chipped ahead and gathered to score the final points of the game .
