Kings Ease to Comfortable Win - 06-04-24

Kingsbridge finished their league season with a comfortable win away to Wiveliscombe 12-31. With conditions underfoot extremely heavy they still managed to score five tries, including a hattrick from Toby Baldry. Kings much the fitter of the two sides tried to play expansive rugby although the pitch made it hard, they looked the classier outfit.

Kings looked to have got off to the perfect start with a penalty on the Wivs twenty-two, playing on they lost the ball, Wivs broke out and should have scored but kicked the ball dead. Nobody was quite sure why the referee didn’t bring back play for the penalty as there was no advantage. Baldry was heavily involved in the first try of the game, turning the ball over and then latching on to a pass, after Palmer had gathered from a knock on, to score. Newman converted well. Kings allowed Wiveliscombe back into the game after a period of loose play, the home side winger touching down. With half time approaching Kings scored again as Baldry, after some good hands by the backs, put him in space to run through to leave the score 7-12.

Playing with the slope in the second half a now dominant Kings went ahead further as Buckle cut a fine line to score close to the posts. Newman converting. Buckle was unlucky to not score a second as he was deemed to have rolled over as he stretched for the line coming after a wonderful break. By now the conditions were making the game slow and the breakdown hard work. But Kings kept on pressing which led to scrum half Ferguson seeing a gap in the Wivs defence, which he exploited to race through and score. Galvanised Kings came straight back to score their bonus point try as Joe Thompson carried strongly before releasing Sam Jones who made a great run and delivered a perfect off- load to give Baldry his third!. The game was pretty much over as a contest and with Kings beginning to lose concentration, they allowed Wivs a consolation try just before the final whistle. Final score a thoroughly deserved 12-31 victory.
