The Cougars narrowly beaten by Plymouth Uni in an end to end game.

The Cougars played at home this week against Plymouth Uni and started the game off with a roar. Only a minute and a half in and the cougars had already bagged their first goal from a short corner, the Uni keeper saved both of the fabulous Lou Reeds strikes however Laura Kerly was ready and waiting to pop the ball into the back of the net. The opposition quickly retaliated and stormed down to Kingsbridge’s 23, Cool as a cucumber Captain Fi Wadey controlled her defence and halted Plymouth uni’s advances, unfortunately they equalised making it 1-1.

The Cougars utilised what they practised in training and stood high and strong giving the Uni
Side no choice but to transition across the back, keeping in their third forwards Charlotte Budgen and Gemma Samuels had some terrific shots on goals but were unlucky not to score. Plymouth Uni made some quick attacks but the lightening fast reactions of right and left backs Katie Merrin and Rachel Roberts meant many attempts were thwarted; the relentless pressure form the Uni side scored them a goal, meaning the cougars had to add another 10% to their ferocity and game play.

With the first half over Captain Fi Wadey gave a rousing team talk and Kingsbridge were eager to get back on the pitch. Plymouth Uni were awarded short corner after short corner, but the defence stayed focused and dealt with each one as it came unfortunately a cheeky deflection form a Uni stick put them one more goal up. Right half Tess Baker brought out her inner lioness and charged up the side line, unfazed by the Uni tackles keeping her eye on the goal, with a quick pass to Kerly who drove it into the D. Kerly, taking it easy by diving onto the floor and reverse hitting into the sky, when Tess swooped in and smashed it mid air into the goal.

In the nail biting last 15 minutes Plymouth Uni had a player sent off for stick tackling and midfields Sophie Claughton and Helen Symons took full advantage of this, they darted in and around the opposition into the attacking 25. Kingsbridge were awarded a few short corners and came so close to equalising however were unlucky not to, Player of the match was deservedly won by Tess Baker and a huge thank you for our match ball sponsor Hatch Marquee Hire.
