Gus, our Chair, reflects on the start of the 24/25 season with the Steelers

Dear reader,

September has been a challenging but rewarding month for the Steelers, with plenty to be proud of across the club as we kick started the 24/25 season. Here are some of my highlights.

On the 7th September, I pulled on my boots as the 1st XV faced a tough Stanford Le Hope side in our first league game of the season. The team faced an uphill battle with only one sub available on the bench, but their determination was evident throughout. While the result wasn’t what we hoped for, the commitment of all players was undeniable.

The following week, on the 14th September, I was on the sidelines watching the 1st XV take on Billericay in a scrappy, hard-fought match that ended in a draw (25-25). The team showed real character to come back from a half-time deficit, and while it wasn’t a win, it was a step in the right direction.

A standout moment for the month for me came on the 21st September when the club fielded three teams - a huge achievement for us so far this season. I was at the 2nd XV's first match of the season at Campion, where we saw players stepping up from the 3s and 4s to take on a well-drilled side (10-65). It was a tough game, but the way our players rose to the challenge showed the depth, resilience and talent within the club. I left the match with an Oggie-shaped bruise on my ribs which gave me another few weeks on the sideline (editor's note: Simon Ogden, aka Oggie, is our 'retired' Vice-Chair).

On the 28th September, I was down at the clubhouse as our 1s came away with their first win for the season against Old Brentwoods (29-19). On the same day, the 4th XV were in action against our IGR friends, the Bristol Bisons, battling in a close contest (7-20). Unfortunately, I can’t make it to every game, but I was incredibly proud to hear about our 3rd XV's strong win against the Stags in a London derby (61-22).

Across the board, the effort from everyone pulling on their boots has been inspiring, and the commitment from our players and coaching staff is something to be proud of - we're all set for a big season ending with our summer Tour to Oslo next year.

We’ve faced some tough moments, but September showed the strength and spirit that runs through the club. Let’s keep that momentum going into October! If you want to join us on that journey, you can join the club now by signing up using this link.

Yours in rugby,

Gus
