The 2nd XV will be looking forward to a tougher challenge next season after finishing second in Essex Merit Table 5, and subsequently being promoted!
At the beginning of the season, following a league restructure, the team was offered a position in Merit 5, having spent the previous season in the division below. That challenge being accepted, the initial goal was to be competitive and achieve solid mid-table status.
The season started off with 2 wins and 2 losses in the first four games - though both losses earned a losing bonus point. From that point, however, the team tore up the league, only losing twice more for the rest of the season - and both times in agonisingly close matches to Woodford, the eventual league champions (24 - 27 away, and 10 - 14 at home).
The team were unbeaten between November and February, and amassed a whopping 618 points by the end of the season - the highest in the league. Built initially on a foundation of solid defence, the team developed the ability to attack from all areas of the pitch; often displaying powerful dominance in the forwards and clinical pace from the backs.
The season isn't over yet though - as the winning streak also included a cup run in the John Adler trophy, with the final against Old Brents to be played on 6 April.
Before then, the 2s will also be competing in the League Cup (Semi finals 23rd March, Finals 30th March, giving them the chance to be one of the most successful teams in Steelers history!
