Excellent point gained away to league leaders

The long journey last Saturday to play Thurlow Nunn Premier Division league leaders Histon at the Glasswheel Stadium saw Kirkley & Pakefield FC return home with a well deserved and excellent point in a very entertaining 2-2 draw twice coming back from behind. With the team already at a loss of first team players they had another casualty on the morning of the match with Lee Will going down sick but they were fortunate enough to see captain Jack Herbert arrive back from his schools skiing holiday early in time to play as an emergency striker. The ‘Royals’ came under pressure from the start with keeper Adam Rix facing the strong sunlight punching out well, he also saw another attempt go over the bar and a header go just wide. On 17minutes the ‘Royals’ best attack to date saw Matty Brown and Jordan Haverson break and combine well with the latter shooting just wide, a couple of minutes later a good Miguel Lopez free-kick went across goal but nobody was able to get a touch on it. The home keeper Sam Roach was then put under extreme pressure from his own full back but managed to spectacularly clear well from near his goal line. Lopez floated in a centre with Jack Herbert heading just over. On 29minutes Histon were putting mounting pressure on the ‘Royals’ goal with Rix saving, the ball was pumped back in cleared then they hit the woodwork this was again blocked before clearing down field. On 36minutes the ball was booted down field with Histon centre forward Dan Brown beating the advancing Rix with a looping header to put the home team 1-0 up.

The second half saw Histon miss a good early chance to increase their lead, then on 50minutes a good pass by Haverson found Brown whose good strike was well saved, from the corner Owen French put in a powerful header that was saved on the line. Rix then stopped well from a Danny Gould shot, the ‘Royals’ were pressing had for the equaliser and on 67minutes it paid off when Matty Brown shot in well from inside the area. It took just six minutes before Histon were back in the lead when from a long throw in saw sub James Chiivers headed in well giving the keeper no chance. On 83minutes a long throw from Brown saw French header against the bar with make shift striker Herbert following up to header in to bring the scores back level at 2-2. The ‘Royals’ continued to press the league leaders with goalmouth incidents of headers then Hammond shot just wide, in another goalmouth scramble a Haverson centre was put out for a corner which saw Hammond header over. With the game drawing to a close Bell made a vital tackle that earned him a booking, but with the free-kick from the edge of the area blasted over ensured the ‘Royals’ a hard earned point from a good team performance that saw the unusual back four line up of Bell, French, Creamer and Soares perform admirably.
