The Knappers bow-out of the league cup at Redding Way.

The Knappers hosted CCL Premier North side, Hilltop FC in the third round of the Combined Counties Cherry Red Records league cup on Tuesday 30 January 2024 looking to improve on the previous Saturday’s (27 Jan 24) league draw against Guildford City. With several players absent, it was a chance for others to impress the management.

From the start of this cup tie, it was obvious that Hilltop weren’t going to sit back and let Knaphill set the pace.

The early minutes saw Hilltop have several openings, with their pressing game creating chances, one of which saw their number 9 fail to convert a great dribble into the box and a disallowed goal on the 10th minute for offside.

Hilltop, despite their bottom position in the CCL North Division (due to a good run in the FA Vase), clearly looked a side better than their league position suggested.

As the half progressed, neither side could produce that moment of magic that would bring the opening goal. Pike coming close in the 30th minute with a shot that was straight at the keeper. The halftime score 0-0.

After the break, it was obvious that the home side had addressed some things from the first half. The work rate was increased and it was The Knappers that started creating chances. A strong run and shot from Will Jacob in the 50th minute was blocked, as was the follow up by the opposition defence. Burchett also had a strong run that produced a save from the Hilltop keeper. Hilltop looked a bit shocked with Knaphill’s workrate as they started to question a lot of decisions and lost their momentum from the first half.

The game seemed to enter a new phase with both sides turning this into a proper cup tie, end to end stuff at Redding Way.

With the game looking like it was heading to penalties, the decisive moment came on the 80th minute. A good ball was threaded through the Knappers defence and the pacy number 7 for Hilltop was left with just Jos to beat. He did so by slipping a low shot under the advancing home keeper. 0-1

Knaphill went all out at the restart and very nearly equalised in injury time. Will Jacob again with a superb run from deep out on the right. Unfortunately his shot just fizzed over the left upright.

The Knappers wish the best of luck to Hilltop for the rest of the season, and in the FA Vase.

FINAL SCORE: Knaphill 0 - 1 Hilltop FC.
