The Knappers retain The Dave Taylor Shield, in style.

Knaphill retained The Dave Taylor Shield in emphatic style, defeating neighbours Sheerwater, 1-6 at the Eastwood Leisure Centre, on a cold Saturday afternoon (13 Jan 2024).

The crowd of 141 turned out for the local derby full of expectation, with Knaphill supporters looking for the squad to improve on the previous week’s defeat at Spelthorne.

The game started in typical derby fashion, with the obligatory tackles going in and both sides looking to stamp their authority on the game.

It was Sheerwater that started well, their game plan seeming to get former Knaphill forward Danny Taylor on the ball as soon as possible. His surging runs and crosses down their right ending up with no joy on three early occasions.

Knaphill settled into the game and took the lead on 15 minutes when the Maz Bristow Memorial Trophy man of the match Zac Hawker fired the ball into the Sheers net after good work from Aziz.

Knaphill continued to press Sheerwater during the first half, looking to add to the opener, with efforts from Aziz, Pike and the lively Sani, all going close.

With halftime approaching, Aziz doubled Knaphill’s lead, right on 45 minutes with a firm strike from the edge of the box. However, despite the 0-2 scoreline, Sheers went in still thinking they could probably turn it around given their good work in the first half.

The second half started and it was Knappers that came out with the bit between their teeth. A driving run from Sani went unchallenged and he slipped in Thumwood to make it 0-3 on 50 minutes.

This seemed to knock the Sheers as it seemed a case now of how many Knaphill could get.

But despite the scoreline and chances being created, Sheerwater regrouped and kept making things difficult for Knaphill, breaking out a few times and creating a few chances themselves.

Sani made it 0-4 with a tap in from close range from an Aziz corner on 57 minutes.

Will Jacob, who came on for Nick Thumwood, earned a penalty in the 64th minute after being pulled down in the box during a surging run. Jacob sent the resulting penalty straight down the middle to make it 0-5.

The goal of the game came in the 73rd minute when Knaphill were awarded a free kick on the edge of their own box. Taken quickly it caught Sheerwater off guard. A flowing move out to the right, the ball was fed to Sani who made an excellent run that left him one on one with just Hill to beat. This he did with ease and slotted to make it 0-6.

Credit to Sheerwater, they kept going and continued to make things a bit uneasy for Knaphill. They got their reward when Selleck pounced on a defensive mix up and poked the ball home in the 88th minute to make the final score Sheerwater 1-6 Knaphill.

Lee Trussler's thoughts on the match: "It was great to get back to winning ways this afternoon after the disappointment of last weeks result. League position and form is irrelevant in a local derby as it means much more than any other game.

This was probably the most pleasing performance of the season so far. Not just the result, but the players implemented everything we asked of them pre game. We controlled the game from minute one which was really satisfying, and even when in front we kept pushing forwards and creating chances. Attacking players will get the plaudits today for the score line but yet again our defence was solid and didn’t allow the sheers any opportunities on the break. The only disappointment was to not keep a clean sheet and that’s something to improve on and make sure we don’t switch off.

As a group we are still and will always be learning but we take each game as it comes with the sole aim of 3 points each week regardless of who we are playing. As they say, onto the next one."
