Knutsford Make Statement as the Season Resumes.

Nick Hopkins22 Jan - 10:45

2025 sees the start of change

As the curtain rose on the second half of the 24/25 season a sense of change was in the air. After a frustrating set of results the boys arrived after the recess determined to draw a line in the sand and put right the previous months.

With Tim Wetjen leading the troops Knutsford immediately put the pressure on from the kick and swiftly found themselves on the front foot. A swift turn over by Giles Robertson and structured play saw Knutsford work their way promptly into Macclesfield 22.
I’ll discipline following a knock by Knutsford saw a flurry of penalties push the home team deep into their half, and poor defensive setting saw the hosts punished from a pick and go. At the kick off, Knutsford blooded, quickly got on the front foot. Dominant forwards play by talisman Giles Robertson and new comer Jack Barnes found Knutsford positioned well within the 5 yard line. Wes Barnes from the tap bulldozered his way over the line to take the try.

With a man advantage, Knutsford with a breath of confidence quickly settled in and following consistent height pressure play saw the first half close with a second try by Wetjen which was smoothly converted by Lewis Davies.
Into the second half and Knutsford fumbled the catch at the start, in slight disarray Macclesfield punished the defensive set up and crossed the line with less than a minute gone. A swift turn around and knutsford responded with James Southall crossing the line to take back the advantage for Knutsford.

While the hosts had Macclesfield on the back foot, this game was far from done. Over the next 25 minutes Knutsford were tested defensively with sustained pressure from Macclesfield’s bombardment. Heroic tackling from the lads held the visitors at bay. Two yellow cards at one point put Knutsford down to 13 men however Macclesfield failed to break through and capitalise on the running sin bins.

Noah Martin sensing a chance performed a magnificent interception and with his foot on the gas made 70 yards from the Knutsford line. Lewis Davies in support created a two on one and Davies crossed the line to secure the bonus point.

At the close another swift interception by Southall and an inspired round the back pop to Wetjen saw the hosts take their fifth try of the afternoon and bring a close to the days proceedings. Next week Knutsford meet Buxton in what is always a tight well fought match.
