Dear All,
We have recently been alerted to a small outbreak of what might be ‘Scrum Pox’ occurring in players from various Club.
It is important that we try to prevent the spread of this therefore I have prepared the following information and advice and would appreciate if you could pass this on to all players in your Club teams and also keep a look out for other players who may also have symptoms.
This is a virus (from the Herpes Simplex group of viruses) and spread by close contact with others, especially when skin abrasions are present. Symptoms include, painful fluid-filled blisters, often on the neck, chest, face, stomach, and legs, headaches, fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes and generally run-down feeling.
Advice;
1/ if any players are feeling feverish or run down, they should not train or play. They should see their usual family doctor ASAP .
2/ players with signs and symptoms can be treated with anti-virals to help reduce symptoms and prevent them from transmitting the virus to others
3/ no-one should train or play with open sores. If the sores can be covered with occlusive dressings and clothing they should be OK but this is obviously not possible if the sores are on the face.
4/ player should be on anti-virals (usually for 5 days) and sores should be dry and have been crusted over for at least 72 hours before they are ‘safe’ to train or play
If in doubt, or for any queries, please contact me
Many thanks for your assistance,
Lucy
