U16 Rock-a-fella tournament 3 of 4

3. Day 2: A Glimmer of Hope

Our next game was scheduled for Sunday morning at 09H30 and upon arriving at the field there was a different mood in the team. They were more confident, more amped than the day before. Our opponents before entering the knock phase were Cedar United. Cedar was the No 1 contender in our group and had not lost a game yet. The first whistle was the starting point of a nail biting games made evident early on as the ref handed out 2 yellow cards, one to each team. Cedar's frustrations at not pushing our boys around became evident when two successive offside’s was given in favour of Kuilsriver and team players challenged the referees’ decision. At the end of the 1st half, still no goal was produced, but it was very clear who was in control of the game, Kuilsriver AFC. Minutes after the 2nd half started, Liam Van Rooy broke through and made a quick run on goal. With a perfect shot he managed to pass the goalie and connect with the back of the net, putting Kuils River ahead 1-0. The games pace picked up as Cedar did their level best to pull back a goal but our backline would have none of it. In the end, what seemed like a definite loss, turned out to be a confident win.

After a long 4 hour break our first Knock-Out game would be against the tournament hosts, Rock-a-Fellas. From the very start one could see the benefits these academy clubs have and Rock-a-Fellas started dominating the game from the mid 1st half. Even so, our boys never had a can’t-do attitude and played as hard as they could. This determination gave us a few opportunities to shoot at goal, but our boys were denied at each attempt. RockaFella’s eventually found a way to break through our boys defence and at the end of the 1st half we found ourselves trailing 1-0. The 2nd half whistle went and Rock-a-Fellas came out onto the field with a new determination. Having sized up our backline and midfield, Rock-a-Fella’s quickly used a similar lay-up to their first goals and found that they netted another two quick goals early on. Kuilsrivers boys fought back valiantly, taking the game to RockaFellas by constantly keeping them under pressure. After two hard fought halves of football, Rock-a-Fella’s walked away triumphant, knocking our boys out of the tournament.
