An early treat for you this week because I'm moving house tomorrow...

We're lucky enough to have many Jessica's on the Lakenham membership database, and JBakes is one of the finest examples. She captained our touch team to gracious defeat at this year's summer league and drags along one of our loyal team photographers, JakeBakes, to many of our games.

Name: Jess Baker aka JBakes
Age: 25
Position: Centre

When did you start playing rugby and why?
I really wanted to take up a sport and I've always enjoyed watching rugby and my boyfriend Jake plays so when I said I want to join a team he supported and encouraged me to join Lakenham and what a joy it has been from day 1!

Can you remember your first training session or game with Lakenham?
I joined midway through last year's Epic Preseason and it was great as it gave me a chance to get to know everyone before being thrown into the game scenarios.

What do you like to eat before a match?
I like to have a massive smoothie, most likely strawberry and banana with a good glug of maple syrup for extra energy

How do you calm your pre-match nerves?
Shania Twain calms my nerves.

What training sessions or drills do you like best?
Kicking and tackling are my favourite sessions, I particularly enjoyed Dee's kicking session which including a kicking competition (and not just because Easter eggs were won)

What three qualities are most important for succeeding in your position or rugby in general?

  1. Good communication is vital, let's us know what plays we are ready to make and that everyone is in the right positions.
  2. Don't beat yourself up if you make a mistake, get back up and work hard to make up for it, it'll soon be forgotten
  3. Support your team, on and off the pitch

What has been your favourite rugby social?
I've loved the camping trips we've had but my favourite has got to be my first social out with the team for the murder history pub crawl of Norwich. Educational and also beer.

What do you do outside of rugby?
I spend a lot of time with family and friends. I love being outdoors, going for walks up the coast, etc. I am also partial to a Netflix binge and video games

Finally, can we have two truths and one lie?

  1. I'm a classically trained singer
  2. I play the ukulele
  3. Shania Twain and I have high-fived

I feel like a Shania Twain tribute act may be in the pipelines... come along to training on Tuesday nights if you'd like to find out which is the lie. We'll also be at the club this Sunday to watch England's first match of the World Cup, so pop along for a drink and say Hi!
