Lakenham Hewett v Watton

This Saturday Lakenham made their long awaited return to EC2 at Hilltops against a very physical Watton side. Lakenham stormed out of the blocks, following some patient phases from the forwards Chris Sheehy kicked into the corner for Kristian Boreham to touch down. Although Lakenham took an early lead, there was no way this Watton side were going to take this lying down. They dominated the majority of the first half with some fantastic attacking play between the backs, but unfortunately when it came to the final pass it would go wayward. Lakenham's defence continued to hold strong, some strong tackles from Graham Cook in the centres continuously shutting down promising Watton attacks. Having absorbed the pressure, Chris Sheehy almost had the chance to double the score.. Intercepting the ball in his own 22 and those weak Southern Hemisphere hammies unable to take him any further. Watton would not ease up, it almost felt like constant waves of hard lines from the Watton pack.. Lakenham's job got a whole lot harder when Kristian Boreham was yellow carded for throwing the ball at the oppositions head... Can't be condoned.. but seeing it ping off the blokes forehead was funny!!

The second half continued to be a tense affair, both teams were truly in a war!! However Watton opened the scoring in the half, making the most of their one man overlap the winger going on a fantastic solo run to dot down. Watton were bolstered by the score, continuing to run hard at the Lakenham defence, one too many infringements gave Watton a penalty in front of the sticks to make it Watton 10-5 Lakenham.
The Lakenham of years ago would've simply folded, however the mental resilience from the boys was something to behold!! Lakenham managed to work their way up the pitch, through a series of good kicking from Sheehy and Squires and some great forward lines from Arturo Bernal and Aaron Guy. And finally, Lakenham were back in the lead, Sheehy popping off to Dan Baker who went on a magical 7.5 yard run to put Lakenham into the lead. The last quarter consisted of some fantastic game management from Lakenham, keeping the ball tight and kicking it in behind the back three when needed. This gave Lakenham some good territory to launch another attack, Chris Sheehy making the most of a small gap in the Watton defence to run in under the sticks and give Lakenham a 9 point lead. Massive credit to Watton, they continued to come at us all game, they are definitely one of the best sides in EC2 thats clear to see!! The drama wasn't over, with Lakenham desperately scrambling Warren Hughes took one for the team and was sin binned for a deliberate knock on. Fortunately, Lakenham held out.
