In 2006 Lancaster City Football Club fell into administration following an ill-fated takeover by a local business. High wage bills, debts and unsustainable ambitions soon reversed decades of on and off field progress.

The club, then a member of the Conference North fell into administration and a double relegation followed, something Lancaster City FC has yet to recover from.
