Lancaster City ran out 3-2 winners in the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy Second Round, but it needed a second half turnaround to secure the victory needed to keep the Cup dream alive.
Lancaster City were the aggressors in the opening moments of the game, Charlie Bailey trying his luck from 20 yards out on a couple of occasions, both efforts whistling past the post with the Collieries goalkeeper outstretched.
The first chance on target fell to Josh Abbott. In an unfamiliar position for him at Left wing back found himself in space on the back post and from 12 yards out his shot was tame and easily gathered by Sol Honor.
Atherton Collieries were looking to exploit Abbott's unfamiliarity in the role and on 23 minutes Will Riding plays a defence splitting ball and found Matty Bryan his shot his saved by Andre Mendes with the rebound landing at the feet of Liam Shepherd who had an easy finish to put Colls 1-0 ahead.
Just before half time it was 2. Will Riding once again in space on the right hand side, a low ball to Sheppard whose initial shot was parried by Mendes and the attackers momentum took him forward to slot in for his second, his first goals in senior football.
The second half and it is now Atherton Collieries' turn to defend the attacking going downhill and the changes made off the bench, Aaron Bennett and Lewis Coulton coming on 58 minutes.
On 66 minutes the comeback was underway. A Sam Bailey throw in flicked on by Harrison Beeden and Dylan Thompson backheel got the Lancaster City scoring underway, then Lewis Mansell came on for Nathan Caine.
4 minutes later Aaron Bennett sends the ball into the box looking for Lewis Mansell, but he is fouled by Toba Obitayo and referee Alex Beckett wasted no time in awarding a penalty, which Aaron Bennett slammed into the top right hand corner to bring the cup tie level.
On 81 minutes the comeback was complete. Sam Bailey sending a cross from the right hand side to the back post and Dom Lawson heads it back across goal and Lewis Mansell was on hand to head the ball home from a couple of yards out to complete the comeback and send Lancaster City through to the LFA Challenge Trophy Quarter Final, where Longridge Town will be visiting the Giant Axe for a place in the semis. Tie to be played Tuesday 21st January with a 19:45 kick off.
