LANCASTER City have taken quite a liking to Witton Albion’s Wincham Park.

The Dolly Blues returned to the scene of last Tuesday’s President’s Cup win on Saturday and ran out comfortable winners as they continue their bid for a top-six finish.

Braces from Alex Johnson and Billy McKenna and a strike from cup final hero Dave Swarbrick gave City the league double over their hosts.

City got off to the perfect start when with nine minutes on the clock Michael Hall ran free down the left-hand side and crossed to the far post where the unmarked Alex Johnson dived forward to head home past Witton ‘keeper Matt Cooper.

For the home side Carl Frost forced Martin Fearon into a good save, the City ‘keeper tipping a shot over the top on the half hour.

Undeterred, Frost came close again five minutes later, this time Fearon got down low to his left to save well.

Swarbrick then had an opportunity to double City’s lead just before the break but shot wide.

The City frontman came close again after the break, forcing a good save from Cooper on the hour mark, but just four minutes later the ‘keeper was stranded when a Matt Wood backpass fell short, leaving Johnson to easily tap in his second goal.

Witton tried to mount a comeback, but substitute Matt Woolley had a shot cleared off the line with 15 minutes left, leaving City to wrap up victory with three goals in the last ten minutes.

Mike Rushton broke forward before slipping the ball to Swarbrick for another tap-in with nine minutes left. a minute later Billy McKenna added a fourth, before helping himself to his second in stoppage time.

City were due to travel to promotion-chasing Skelmersdale United last night, Tuesday, April 12 before hosting Salford City, managed by Ryan Giggs’ brother Rhodri, at the Giant Axe on Saturday.
