Lancaster City 1-2 Basford United

Lancaster City played host to Basford United in the Dollies first home league game of the season but ultimately fell short coming away on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline.
After a far from impressive FA Cup win over Runcorn Town, City were looking to pick up their first three points of the season against a Basford side who themselves are looking to push for a top five place.
The opening minute of the game saw City take the front foot with Jacob Gregory going for a long range effort testing opposition keeper Kieran Preston’s ability.
Both sides were equal in their chances, however it was the visiting Basford fans who were left cheering when Stefan Galinski opened the scoring with a thumping header past Sam Ashton.
Lancaster’s fighting spirit and team unity came together because five minutes later Andy Teague fired the ball home after a pass across the face of goal was spilled by the goalkeeper.
Striker Matty Blinkhorn thought he had put City level but he was judged to have fouled a Basford defender as he was through on goal much to the displeasure of the home crowd.
As half time approached the defences of both sides turned on and the teams went into half time level at 1-1.
Just like the opening moments in the first half it was the Dolly Blues who were on the front foot, with David Norris dragging an effort wide of the post and giving City a sense of purpose.
However, sloppy defending at the back saw Alex Howes score what turned out to be a winning goal in the 50th minute.
Lancaster kept on pushing the visitors defence to the brink with a number of headers going towards goal but not finding the back of the net something manager Mark Fell found disappointing post match.
Howes goal turned out to be the biggest moment of the second half as the score remained the same with Basford picking up a deserved win.
Creating chances has been City’s biggest negative over the past few weeks and they will need to fix this when they come up against Morpeth on Tuesday evening at Giant Axe.
