THE South Barbarians under 15 squad, including some Langholm girls, competed in the national sevens tournaments at Broughton rugby club last Sunday.

The competition was open to teams not playing as a school and six played in a round robin format.

Against St Columbus they won by four tries to one, Lisa Thomson and Megan Paisley notching two each. Next was Murrayfield Wanderers and this resulted in a 6-1 win with tries from Caitlin Cottrell (2), Thomson (2), Paisley, and Emily Beattie scoring her first try for the team. Hillhead/Jordanhill provided stiffer opposition but the South won by a narrow 3-2, with Thomson (2) and Paisley scoring.

The South played Auchterarder and were now into full stride, scoring from all over the field to win 5-1. Tries came from Thomson (3), Paisley and Melissa Mullen on her debut.

The South went into the final game unbeaten and only Cumnock stood in their way. Some fine running rugby produced tries from Cottrell (2), Beattie (2) and Thomson, while Ellie Seed claimed her first try after coming very close in two previous rounds.

The team played some very good rugby throughout, both in attack and defence, with 24 tries for and six against. Lauren Meager performed strongly in the forwards and Nicole Campbell continues to improve. Lily Brunton made a good debut.
