Langholm Legion 3-0 Greenlaw

Langholm’s momentum looks to be building after a second successive victory on the 3G over the weekend, a strong defensive performance offering the visitors little chance in front of goal. The teams had faced each other twice this season up the road, with Greenlaw coming out on top both times, leaving the legion men keen to put things right.

A tepid start to the game saw both sides testing each other out, Langholm having some luck down the left-wing whilst Greenlaw sought to use the width of the pitch and try to draw Langholm out of position, chances for either side were limited.

Halfway through the first half Little was fouled deep into the opposition’s half. Cuthbert took the following free-kick and whipped the ball from wide onto the head of Langholm’s captain, Irving, who rose the highest and was able to direct the ball past the keeper, much to the delight of the young fans behind the net.

Greenlaw, struggling to break shape of the home side, began to target their striker with long balls up the pitch, but the centre-back pairing of Dell and Ireland was able to deal with anything that came their way and Langhom went in at the break 1-0 up.

Langholm were quick off the mark in the second half, Cuthbert claimed his second assist of the game as his through ball found Hamilton on the right wing who showed his composure and slotted the ball low past the Greenlaw keeper.

Langholm’s delight was soon diminished as Dell was shown a red for a late challenge on the Greenlaw number 8, leaving langholm to play the rest of the game out with 10 men. Even playing against 10, Greenlaw struggled to break Langholm down and with 10 minutes to go their right-back was shown a second yellow for another late challenge on Little. Confirmation of the opposition’s frustrations came when Little, looking to see the game out, opted to shield the ball in the corner until the Greenlaw centre-back went straight through him with little intent for the ball shown, the defender saw his second yellow and the away team finished the game with 9 men.

Langholm almost made it 3 when a Cuthbert free-kick hit the post and rebounded to Hamilton inside the area who was unable to direct his shot on goal and the game finished 2-0.
