In a seriously workmanlike performance Lasswade ensured an all important bonus point and showed no signs of their old "travel sickness"

Lasswade knew they would likely need three wins and a bonus point from their last three games if they are to cancel out Glasgow Accies strong finish to the season and snatch second place and promotion from them.

Given some incomprehensible away defeats this season, they would have settled for a simple win from this, the last of their journeys. In the event, after a testing opening quarter, the bonus point was secured by half time and four more tries added in the second half.

With a strong breeze at their backs Waysiders used their burly forwards to batter their way into Lasswade territory and keep them pinned there for most of the first quarter hour. The visitors protected their line though and survived the onslaught conceding instead just two penalties to Plenderleith’s boot.

Just 2 minutes into the second quarter and after laying their own siege to the home line, Robertson was held at the line and Clark took the set back to roll off tacklers and touch down for Hennessey to add the two and grab the lead.

In the ascendancy now, Lasswade’s forwards and backs worked together to keep the ball on Waysiders territory and added another five points when Grant finished off a patient and controlled series of possessions and recycles.

On the expiry of normal time Lasswade improvised an attack from a scrappy period of play and it was Clark again who finished off in the corner to make it 19-6.

That should have been the half time score but the restart was worked rapidly back to the home 22 where Quigley spotted a way through, put his head down and rounded tacklers to touch down beside the posts and ensure another seven pointer.

With the game as good as secured Lasswade didn’t rush to press home their advantage even when a home centre was yellow carded to give them and extra man. Just past the fiftieth minute, it was Quigley again who was on hand to reap the reward from some more fifteen-man rugby.

Themselves restored to fifteen men, Waysiders found some extra effort and enterprise and clawed back a consolation try through McKenzie on the hour.

The visitors kept up steady pressure but were held out almost to the end until Hennessey double dummied his way through at half way and Smith took the offload on the scissor to give himself a clear run to the posts.

Two minutes into stoppage time and from a ruck 5 metres out Clark earned his man-of the-match award and third try when he danced round the very narrow tight side and I closer to the posts. Hennessey’s sixth conversion brought up the final whistle and score of 11-52.

This more than workmanlike performance brings the Hawthornden promotion hopes a significant step closer. Glasgow Accies’ ending of their season with a bonus point win at Hawick YM confirms that two wins from their home games against Newton Stewart (1 May) and Hawick (8 May) will secure promotion for the Midlothian side.
