'Ricki sings the blues, in tries of four or less'

'Ricki sings the blues,
in tries of four or less'

The rewording of the opening lines to the Deacon Blue song, 'Fergus Sings the Blues'!!!

You may think I've lost the plot and hey you may well be right, but the above quote will become apparent during this SUPER 2 Match Report.

Another stunning day welcomed the Edinburgh Accies U20 Development Squad to Hawthornden. With the sun beating down and a slight breeze coming in from Rosewell it was perfect for a spot of rugger. On paper the Super 2s were fielding a strong squad with several guys returning from a lay off through injury or looking for valuable game time.

The opening minutes where all the Super 2s with the flying winger Rick McKenna testing the Accies wide out. Good enterprising runs from Greame 'Cookie' Cook and Ashley 'Chook' Gairn set Mr. McKenna up for try number 1,converted by Danny Kerr. Rick, with his blue suede shoes, was well fired up and danced round the Accies defence for try number 2. The team on a whole were performing well across the park with forwards winning good secure ball from scrums and line outs which offered plenty of the ball for the backs to run good hands and show some slick moves. On the occasions that Accies did get ball in hand, good defence was stopping them making in roads. Jack Cowan and Jed Smith were putting some monster hits in. Oops spoke to soon, sloppy tackling let Accies score a converted try. Oops I did it again, poor tackling lets Accies in again. This spurred the Super 2s into action and after concerted pressure from scrums and line outs in the Accies 22, the ball was swung wide to those blue boots who made good ground up the wing. Quick recycled ball saw it swing back back across field to Cookie to run in the try with an overlap.

HALF TIME – LASSWADE 2XV 17 – EDIN ACCIES U20 14

Again a lot of positives for Oz and Martin to build on, with the only negative being complacency when we went ahead allowing Accies back into the game. Craig Quigley replaced Chook in the No. 8 slot and made an immediate impact by dropping a clearance kick - #TAXI FOR QUIGS. Rick was on the rampage and was using some of the Accies players like the weights in the gym. There were some changes made but it did not unsettle the team to much and with another ball swung wide found Rick break through several tackles before crashing into the corner for his hat RICK – number 3. There were plenty of big hits still going in, with Joe Taylor smashing folk round the fringes of rucks. Accies rallied and scored wide out, but again this spurred the Super2s on. Good quick hands created an overlap to allow Rick McKenna to outpace the defence for number 4!!! Accies still came back and forced a score out wide shortly before the referee blew for full time.

FULL TIME – LASSWADE 2XV 27 – EDIN ACCIES U20 24

It was a great result for the Super 2s after coming so close over the last few weeks.
A lot of positives to take forward and can I encourage the guys to get up to training on Thursday night so we can work on the game plan.
Also get memberships sorted out, you know who you are!!!!

Next week, The Super 2s heading down the A1 to Haddington.
