It was a cold and breezy day which took Lasswade down the city bypass to Barnton and the RHC Cougars. Question marks had hung over this game with us struggling to field a team and also the prospect of heavy snowfall. But it did kick off with Lasswade playing with the wind in the first half.
Like the first half at Peebles, Lasswade played all the territory and possession to then let the hosts score on their only visit into our 22. But the never die attitude kicked and some good rugby by the forwards and backs led to Russell Gladstone going over for a well deserved try. Next over the white wash was Ian Wilson again from some sustained pressure on the RHC line. This is were Gordon Ward's mystery tour started as he appeared very confused.com but we were unaware of Gordon sustaining any head knock. The bench was advised of Gordon's predicament and the young, upcoming talent of Dale Robertson, a star of the future, took his place at wing forward. Young Dale took the most of his opportunity to show his stuff in front of the firsts Coach Cobie and scored a try after the forwards had had a good drive from a lineout.
Half time came and went with Coach Craig making some subs and reiterating to the players to keep the penalty count down and continue the good rugby that was being played, especially in such cold conditions. The rugby for Lasswade was going to be tight rugby as they were now playing into the wind. The game was a hard battle in the mid field with neither teams making any real in roads into the opposition's defences. Then saw the youngster Dale Robertson make a rampaging dash for the whitewash which saw him dot it down for a great score. RHC then worked their No. 10's boot and the wind to keep them encamped on the Lasswade line, but the best they came away with was a sweetly struck drop goal. Then came every teams worst moment, a yellow card!! One is bad news, but two is just a nightmare!! Craig Arnot and Rory Mackenzie had a ten minute cooling off period on the touch line. This inspired the teammates who had been left to face the onslaught of 15 man RHC. And they held their nerve to hold RHC out from scoring for this ten minute period. Back to 15-a-side and a late flourish saw Graeme Cook dive over for a well deserved try.
FINAL SCORE: - RHC COUGARS 10 - LASSWADE 33
A big thank you to some of the young lads who came along to help us out and allow the game to go ahead, Dale, James and Markie!!
MAN OF THE MATCH: - RUSSELL GLADSTONE
(ALTHOUGH GORDON STILL THINKS IT WAS HIM CAUSE HE PLAYED LIKE RICHIE MCCAW!!) On a serious note, Gordon did go to A&E, received a CT scan and was given a clear bill of health. Saturday is still a blank to him and the GP has advised him it may come back eventually. Hopefully there will be no long term damage. Good going though to loose a day and still be sober.
