GOALS GALORE

GOALS GALORE

Another great article by Graham Mitchell

Since 1960 Tanners have been involved in 11 matches in which 10 or more goals have been scored. The most recent was in 2011 when Horsham YMCA were thrashed 11-0 on their own patch with 9 different players getting on the score sheet in a Ryman Division One South fixture.

A year earlier Eastbourne Town were thumped 7-3 at the Grove with Greg Andrews scoring a hat trick in another league encounter.

The final home game of the 2001/2 season saw Chertsey Town hammered 8-2 with Ali Chabaan scoring 4 times. In 2001, again in the League, Tanners travelled to Essex and humbled Wivenhoe 9-1 with Alex Inglethorpe netting 5 times.

1998/9 saw plenty of goals with Leyton Pennant being beaten 6-4 in the League Cup and then Croydon 7-3 in the League with hat tricks for both Steve Lunn and Nigel Webb.
Sussex Senior League side Broadbridge Heath were crushed 9-3 in an F A Vase match in 1996. Tanners also enjoyed their trip to Sussex in 1993 with Langney Sports beaten 8-3, this time in an F A Cup tie.

Only once in the 1980’s did 10 or more goals feature in a Leatherhead match and that was the unfortunate 11-1 drubbing at Gander Green Lane, in which Micky Joyce scored nine times for Sutton.

Similarly in the 1970’s there was just the one occasion, this time an epic 5-5 draw after extra time with Wembley in an Athenian League Cup replay in November 1970.
Ten years earlier Horsham won 6-4 at the Grove in the Delphian League.

High scoring was rather more commonplace in the early years. Thirteen times between 1946 and 1960 ten or more goals were scored. Leatherhead’s first season in 1946/7 saw big Surrey Senior League wins over Leyland Motors (13-1), Cobham (12-0), Walton & Hersham Reserves (10-0) and Lagonda Sports (9-1). The following season Cobham were ‘only’ beaten 7-3 whilst Farnham were on the wrong end of an 8-3 hiding. In Tanners final season in the Senior League McLaren Sports were thumped 7-3.

Chipperfield were crushed 11-0 in the Metropolitan League in December 1950 including 5 goals for Doug Caswell, whilst Bishop Stortford won 6-4 in another high scoring Delphian League game in the 1953/4 season. The following season saw Brentwood and Warley defeated 6-4. In 1956/7 Rainham Town were beaten 6-5 in a Delphian Leegue game whilst Bishop Stortford put nine past Tanners who notched up three in reply. In 1958/9 Uxbridge were the second team to be on the wrong end of a 6-5 score line, this time in the Corinthian League.
