Today I take a look back at the hotshots that have graced the turf at Fetcham Grove down the years.
Fred ‘The Head’ Stenning still retains almost all of the club’s goal scoring records, many of which are unlikely ever to be broken.
Only one player other than Stenning has averaged more than a goal a game; Kilby Edwards who scored 88 goals in just 83 games. Of course the game was rather different in those days with the emphasis much more on scoring goals rather than keeping them out.
Today any player who scores more than a goal every other game over a long period can be considered exceptional. In recent times only the Leatherhead Lump, Dave Stevens and Phil Ruggles are above that mark.
Steve Lunn is the most prolific marksman of recent times although another player, Paul ‘Spider’ Williams, contributed 61 goals in 76 games. Steve Lunn was the last player to score more than 40 goals in a season, in our promotion winning season of 1996/97.
Also worthy of mention is Dave Reid, despite being a rugged centre half he regularly reached double figures in the goals column during his nine seasons at the Grove, although unlike fellow centre-halves Iain Hendry and Jerry Nnamani he never managed a hat-trick.
At the other end of the scale full back Johnny Lewis, who represented the Tanners in the early sixties, played more than 150 games without once managing to trouble the scorers.
