The Akkies, who were inspired by a sensational performance by quicksilver fullback Ruth Laybourne, saw off the the host club as well as Huddersfield en-route to their first ever trophy.
Akkies first match was against Huddersfield Ladies. Akkies were a little rusty to start with but some excellent direction from Rose Nash and Ruth Todd at the centre soon allowed Ruth Laybourne to make the first of many breaks up the wing. Huddersfield had some strong players who troubled the Akkies defence with powerful running, but Todd's constant direction kept the line together. Huddersfield were twice held up over the line and determined chasing by Ruth Drury and Laybourne kept Akkies ahead to win.
In defeating Huddersfield, Akkies had already bought a ticket to the final but were determined to take home a clean sweep of victories. In their second match against Brighouse Ladies, Coach Mike Beeken encouraged the Akkies to take the opportunity to experiment with their game play, particularly in the centre of the pitch, although tries still came from Laybourne on the wing. Defence was again excellent with Rebi Dowle confidently directing players all over the pitch.
The final took place in front of a large crowd who had gathered to watch the men's tournament. Akkies were able to have a vital burger break before facing Huddersfield again for the trophy. Despite Akkies entering the final with confidence within the first few minutes it was 1-1 and the match became a little nerve-wracking. Akkies were revitalised by more excellent running from Laybourne. Her pace and quick footwork made her a favourite with the watching spectators who seemed to form a fan club for the speedy player. Michelle Powell was also essential in attack, her constant support and quick thinking set Laybourne up for several tries. Determined defence forced several Huddersfield errors, enabling Akkies to rise two tries ahead with the end in sight. A late ankle injury to Drury left Akkies playing with six players but a quick kick and a single tackle left Akkies victorious with a final score of 20-12.
Akkies director of women's rugby Carl Brown was ecstatic: "The team has been progressing really well in recent weeks," he commented. "The players have been working really hard and this ought to stand them in good stead for the rest of the season."
