LEEK RUFC SETS SIGHTS ON LEAGUE AND CUP GLORY FOR NEW SEASON
Leek RUFC is setting ambitious targets to build on last season’s successes by continuing to develop home-grown talent at all levels with a comprehensive new coaching set-up.
As Leek-based Esterchem agreed a new sponsorship deal for the club, pre-season training stepped up a gear with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XVs setting their sights on cup and league glory.
New club captain Eddie Cheadle has stepped up from vice-captain following Luke Hardern’s two-year tenure, with the team targeting a promotion spot in the Midlands North West 2 league as well as the two Cup competitions.
A strong coaching team of Lee Pickles and assistant coach Chris Mudd and former 1st XV captain Gary McDermott, are now in place which is greatly supported by colts coach, Jack Jones along with some senior players.
They aim to develop all senior squads as well as integrate talent from the up-and-coming Colts team, many of whom represented the Staffordshire U18s, giving the club strength and depth for future success.
The season’s senior XV campaign kicks off with warm-up games on Saturday, August 24th away at Sandbach, followed by the first home warm up game at Esterchem Park on Saturday, August 31st against Vale of Lune RUFC.
This year’s Staffordshire Cup, which saw Leek 1st XV narrowly beaten in the final against Newcastle RUFC last season, gets under way at Walsall on September 7th, followed by the first home league game against Stafford on Saturday, September 14th.
Leek 2Xv commence their season Sat 7.9.19 at home v Winnington park 2 - All games ko at 3pm.
Meanwhile, the 2nd XV, captained by Andy Outram, aim to build on a spectacular 2018-19 season which saw them win the Robinson’s Brewery Shield and win promotion from NOWIRUL Division 4 South to NOWIRUL 3 South. In addition, the 3rd XV, captained by Will Hill plan to make their mark on the Staffordshire League.

At last week’s AGM various updates were provided to a well-attended meet with an update on the club development fund of approx. £25k raised so far in 19 months up to May 2019. As a club we still seek to raise over £50 k against reduced RFU community fund support. The target raised so far is a massive achievement to all club supporters against a backdrop of other funds the club has spent on improving the club house and on field facilities over the past few years.
Chairman Mark Hardern said: “Leek RUFC continues to go from strength to strength and we are working hard to build successful teams at all levels that will give our many players and supporters a great deal to be proud of. It is important that we ensure the club is run in an effective and efficient manner to ensure we keep building for the future which cannot be achieved without some great local sponsors and many volunteers who make the club tick weekly. We again thank our main club sponsors, Esterchem for their continuing support.
“On the field, a priority for the coming season will be to work closely with the RFU and Leek’s own newly-appointed coaching co-ordinator Nathan Bull, to encourage all coaches – particularly at mini and junior level - to boost their qualifications and ensure our youngsters have the best possible training experience along with continuing to build on the whole club playing structure as well as seeking to discuss options to carry out the club house development.
“The coaching and committee changes give us great scope to build on our success as a club which has a fantastic heritage and a fantastic future.”
The club again, has many social functions planned with the first event taking place on the weekend between 20-22 September 2019 where we will be holding a sausage and cider festival at the club which will be supported by the erection of a TIPI supplied by ex 1st team player Josh Mays Woodhead. The Tipi can be viewed during the weekend as a great opportunity to consider wedding and special occasion planning for 2020 and beyond. On Sat 21.9.19 the 1st team will be playing Notts Casuals RUFC at Esterchem park in the intermediate cup. Please continue to view the club Facebook and website for further details and events as we begin to plan around the Rugby World cup.
